Leach frustrated as spring comes to an end

LEACH UNHAPPY WITH WOODS

While spring practice came to a close on Monday afternoon, there is clearly something that head coach Mike Leach continues to lose sleep over. As you can probably guess, the lackluster effort being put forth in practice by star running back Shannon Woods has caused coach Leach to lose quite a bit of sleep. Due to his complacency, Woods finished the spring as the scout team running back behind sophomore Kobey Lewis and walk-on Ryan Hayes.

"He's a scout team player, it's a what have you done for me lately business," Leach said. "We'll see if his efforts get him beyond that, I don't know if they will or not, we'll see."

Leach could apparently care less about the nearly 1,500 all-purpose yards Woods had last season or the 12 touchdowns. He's said more than once that Lewis had outplayed Woods as of late and ended the spring following up those words with actions.

"Some starters last year probably shouldn't have been, we'll use the bench better this year I can guarantee you that."

While sending a message to Woods is one thing, the lack of depth behind him is worrisome and quite-honestly nonexistent with sophomore Baron Batch still out and only Lewis as a proven commodity. This will put a lot of pressure on 2007 signee Jared Flannel, who arrives this summer, to come in and be a viable option. It is the hope that this change on the depth chart will give Woods some motivation to try a little harder. It is now up to Woods to get back in Leach's good graces.
