USC pursuing Tar Heel State lineman
Wilmington (N.C.) New Hanover offensive lineman Nick Becton may be new to the game of football, as 2006 was his first year playing the sport, but that hasn't prevented college recruiters from tracking him down.
"So far, I have four full scholarship offers," the 6-foot-6, 290-pound Becton said. "South Carolina, ECU, NC State and Maryland have offered me. A lot of other schools are recruiting me, but those are the ones who have offered."
Becton, who has been timed as low as 5.1 seconds in the 40-yard dash, attended the Gamecocks' Garnet & Black Spring Game last month and liked what he saw in Columbia.
"The big thing that stood out to me was the fans," he said. "They had a huge crowd there for the a spring game, and it seemed like it was all about Gamecock football down there. They had a concert during pre-game, and that was pretty cool, too. I didn't get to really talk to their coaches, but I know coach (Steve) Spurrier is a great coach."
