One To Remember
Noah Cottrill was not discovered at a glitzy national AAU tournament or a glamorous summer camp sponsored by a major shoe company.
The first time he was seen by a Florida coach, it was Donnie Jones, was in the nondescript Huntington (W.Va.) YMCA when he was working out with Patrick Patterson, Bill Walker and O.J. Mayo. The rest, as they say, is history.
By that time, Patterson, Mayo and Walker were national names. Walker ended up signing with Kansas State. Patterson picked Kentucky. Mayo is headed to Southern California. Jones is now the head coach at Marshall. When Cottrill was first spotted in that YMCA, it was the summer going into his 8th grade year.
Fast forward and now Cottrill, who is 15 years old and one of the top guards in the 2010 class, has offers from Florida, West Virginia and Marshall. The 6-foot-2 point guard also lists interest from Kentucky. Others are also involved. Cottrill started as a freshman at Poca (W.Va.) H.S. this past season and led the state in scoring in Class AA with 24 points per game.
