Countdown: Key Wolverine No. 17

The Wolverine.com staff has voted upon, selected and ranked the top 25 Michigan football players most essential to a winning effort in 2007. We continue the countdown of the top 25 in reverse order, moving on to No. 17.

Greg Mathews did everything right as a freshman wide receiver for the Wolverines last fall. No, that doesn't mean the rookie out of Orlando made no mistakes or came in with nothing to learn about college football. It means he came in, did everything he was asked to do, committed fully to becoming better, and got enough of a taste on the field to make himself a factor the next three years - not to mention earning the No. 17 slot on our list of key Wolverines this season.

The 6-3, 207-pound sophomore went about his business in a manner that earns the trust of his coaches. With veterans Mario Manningham and Adrian Arrington out of commission in spring practice, Mathews showed plenty, earning comparisons to former U-M captain Jason Avant, albeit with more speed than Avant.

"Greg Mathews had a great spring and made a lot of plays in there," U-M offensive coordinator Mike DeBord observed.
