Smith ready to make an impact
Michigan has gone after and recruited several oversized safety prospects in the past. At 6-4 and 225 pounds, Ernest Shazor stayed at that safety position and took home All-American honors for the Wolverines in 2004. Another jumbo safety prospect out of high school, Prescott Burgess, meanwhile, outgrew the safety position in college and became an all-Big Ten linebacker for the Wolverines.
At 6-3 and 210 pounds, New Brunswick (N.J.) athlete Brandon Smith certainly has the size to translate into several different positions at the college level. Teams are looking at him for quarterback, wide receiver, linebacker and safety. Michigan, though, has pegged him as a safety prospect.
