Shepard knows he's a marked man

Once a player, or team, has made it to the peak, every competitor that crosses their path will give a little extra effort in an attempt to get one over on the best of the best. The Texas Longhorns experienced that situation last year, with every team on their schedule playing as if beating the defending national champs was the equivalent of winning the Super Bowl.

Just this week, Orangebloods.com released its preliminary 2009 Lone Star Recruiting list, and quarterback Russell Shepard earned top honors. But as they say, with great power comes great expectations.

On the recruiting front, Shepard continues to list a handful of schools that have caught his attention, including Texas, LSU, Florida, Arkansas and Alabama. But there are also some new players in the sweepstakes. West Virginia, Tennessee and Notre Dame have begun showing attention, and Shepard is keeping all options open.
