Owls expected to land VA linebacker
Temple coach Al Golden has a head start when it comes to recruiting the class of 2008. He's lined up 10 commitments already, and it looks like he could be close to landing No. 11.
OwlScoop.com has learned that Lawrence Turner, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound linebacker from Heritage High School in Newport News, Va., is close to giving Golden and the Owls a verbal commitment. Heritage head coach Jason Robinson confirmed with OwlScoop.com that Turner is expected to commit soon and hopes to visit Temple's campus and meet with the coaches once the season starts.
Turner is considered to be a bit of a sleeper because he has only played one year of high school football after playing basketball. His only other scholarship offer at this point has come from Norfolk State. Liberty, Old Dominion, Richmond and Navy have expressed significant interest, and Duke and Virginia have given Turner a look as well.
As is often the case in recruiting, there's a connection here. Robinson played at Virginia when Golden was there as a graduate assistant, so the two are familiar with each other.
Turner would be the third linebacker from the class of 2008 to commit to the Owls. Archbishop Carroll linebacker Geoffrey Prather was Temple's first '08 verbal, and the Owls have also received a commitment from Scotch Plains-Fanwood (NJ) linebacker Keith Baker.
