Smith: 'My heart was at Michigan State'
Four-star wide receiver Fred Smith of Detroit Southeastern High School made his commitment to Michigan State University yesterday at a press conference at his school. SpartanMag.com was on hand and has quotes about why Smith decided that his future on the football field and the basketball court will be in the Green and White.
Smith indicated that he was getting plenty of information from other people as far as what his decision should be. While Smith listened to that information, in the end the decision came down to something very simple.
"I had a lot of people in my ear telling g me what I should do, Smith said. "I just had to go with my heart and where my heart was, was Michigan State."
As far as making the actual decision, Smith indicated that finally making his selection was a relief.
"It feels real good to get the decision over with, Smith said. "It took a lot of thinking. I was confused a lot and then I just went with me heart
I went to church today and thought about it and I am comfortable with my decision."
So what was one of the things that stood out to the 6-foot-2, 207-pound athlete about Michigan State?
"The environment," Smith said. "It seemed like everyone was a family and I also want to play basketball at Michigan State"
Smith is considered on of the top basketball players in Michigan for the class of 2008. He will be able to join the Spartan squad once he finishes up football and play with fellow Michigan standouts like Durrell Summers and Kalin Lucas. Smith could be playing in front of his hometown when the Final Four hits Detroit in 2009.
As far as what the Spartan like about Smith as a player and a person, he had the following to say.
"My character, they said I am a nice kid," he said. "They also said that I was athletic and could stretch the field and a big play wide receiver."
The Spartans made Smith a top priority early on in the recruiting process and according to him that high-level of interest made an impact on him.
"When I saw the head coach (Mark Dantonio) at my high school I knew they were serious about me," Smith said. "I have seen numerous coaches on their staff at my school. They came hard."
Needless to say, the commitment of Smith is a big coup for Coach Dantonio and his staff. Smith's primary recruiter fro Michigan State was Coach Dan Enos. Coach Enos has been handling much of the Detroit area as well as Oakland County for the Spartans.
The commitment of Smith gives the Spartans two prospect that SpartanMag.com ranks as top five players in Michigan for the class of 2008.
