SpartanMag.com's: Best in Michigan for 2008
Many Michigan State fans were "shocked" when the Rivals 250 was released yesterday and both Michigan State commitments had somehow fallen in the rankings. No, we don't think it is a Michigan State conspiracy, but we do not necessarily agree with them either.
The only thing we can say to Spartan fans is that Spartanmag.com sees these kids play in person much more often than most of the national analysts. We see them not only at NIKE camps, but at Michigan States camp, at 7-on7's and in the fall in actual games.
Keep in mind, our rankings have often varied from the national analysts. Ranking recruits is an inexact science at best. With that being said, we think our track record on recruits speaks for itself.
We have often been ahead of the national analysts on guys like Otis Wiley, Alex Mitchell, Kellen Freeman-Davis, Will Johnson, Eric Gordon and Jalen Parmalee. This year alone we were high on guys like Deon'tae Pannell and Caulton Ray before the offers began to roll in. It is our job to have an extensive knowledge of the state of Michigan.
Below we take a close look at some of the prospects in the top 10:
#2 WR Fred Smith of Detroit Southeastern High School:
Smith is a flat out stud. Michigan State and Michigan do not go toe to toe as hard as they did for a kid who is not a "special" player. Smith's recruitment was one of the most aggressive battles between the Spartan and Wolverines in years.
Keep in mind our ranking of Smith was done approximately two weeks ago when it was unclear what school he would attend. We saw him at Michigan State's July camp and he was exceptional. That performance came on the heels of his performance at the Michigan Camp that was equally impressive.
SpartanMag.com has long stated that Smith is exactly the type of receiver Michigan State is looking for now that they are going back to a pro-style. We have made the comparison of Smith to former Spartan and NFL All-Pro Mushin Muhammad. We will stick by that assessment and this lofty ranking.
