Perkins in the mix to play early

BOULDER, Colo. - Head coach Dan Hawkins has said that he expects at least a dozen true freshmen to see the field this season. One of the newcomers showing well in camp is defensive back Anthony Perkins.

"He is so doggoned smart and he took advantage of the summer so he is way ahead in terms of his years," Hawkins said when asked about Perkins after Wednesday morning's practice. "He picks things up well and retains things well.

"I would guess that you'll see him kind of in the mix. We're trying to load him up with special teams and find him a nitch and a role. I think he'll be one of those guys that will go this year."

Known more for his accomplishments on the offensive side of the ball at Northglenn (Colo.) High School, Perkins accounted for 5,250 yards of total offense as a junior and senior. He was named the Front Range League Offensive Player of the Year both seasons.
