Bowman stands out in debut

The battle for the third outside linebacker spot between Tyrell Sales and Navorro Bowman was one of the most highly contested races in preseason camp, and both made their case for the starting job on Saturday against Florida International.

The veteran Sales got the start against Florida International, and played well, recording three tackles and forcing a fumble, but Bowman got plenty of chances to flash his potential.

The redshirt freshman stood out the most on special teams, where he forced and recovered a fumble on a punt return in the third quarter, and later in the frame broke though the line and got his hand on a punt. Both plays gave the Nittany Lions the ball inside the FIU 30-yard line.

Getting the opposition to put the ball on the turf is something that Bowman and his teammates have stressed this offseason.

"The defensive side of the ball has emphasized going after the ball, putting the ball on the ground," he said. "The ball is an issue for a defensive team. Making the ball an issue was a main priority for us."
