Thomas close to setting up official visits

Tommie Thomas is looking to begin taking his official visits in late November.

Which programs does the 6-foot-2, 185-pound standout from Oak Lawn (Ill.) Richards plan to check out?

"Illinois, Iowa, Kansas State, Colorado and Indiana," he explained. "Those are my favorites. I talk with each of those schools on a weekly basis."

Cincinnati and Purdue have also extended scholarship offers.

Going into his official visits, Thomas admits that Illinois has the lead for his signature.

"I just like the coaches, players and the overall environment at Illinois," he said. "I'm real familiar with their program. I went to their game against Western Illinois earlier this fall. I'm going out to Illinois' game at Iowa this Saturday so that will give me a chance to see what Iowa has to offer. And then I am going to go back to Illinois in October when they play Michigan."

Linebackers coach Brian Cabral is responsible for Thomas' recruitment from the Buffaloes' staff.

"I've heard that it is nice out there," he said when asked about Colorado. "I am also talking to the basketball coaches at Colorado. I have been talking to them about potentially playing both sports in college. They are the program that has shown the most interest in me as a two-sport player."

A two-way starter at quarterback and safety for Richards, Thomas has scored 21 touchdowns through six games of his senior season. Most colleges project him to play safety at the next level.

Thomas was an all-conference selection last fall after he recorded 85 tackles and 10 interceptions.
