Tennessee commit eyeing USC

Hickory (N.C.) three-star linebacker Austin Johnson committed to the Tennessee Volunteers over one year ago, but that hasn't prevented the South Carolina Gamecocks from maintaining communication with him.

"South Carolina has stayed in touch with me," the 6-foot-3, 240-pound Johnson said. "I went down to their game with Vandy a few weeks back, and I liked it a lot."

Johnson said one primary thing stood out about his trip to Carolina.

"The coaches," he said. "I like their coaches a lot. Coach (Fred) Chatham is my recruiter, and he's a great guy. I also met coach (Brad) Lawing and coach (Tyrone) Nix. They seemed like good guys, too."

Johnson, who runs the 40-yard dash in 4.65 seconds, also saw a familiar face while in Columbia.

"Their kicker, Ryan Succop, is from my same high school," he said. "He's having a great career down there and likes everything a lot."

Johnson originally committed to Tennessee for multiple reasons.

"I was looking to go with the team that wanted me the most, and they showed me the most attention," he said. "Coach (Dan) Brooks is a great guy, and I grew up a Tennessee fan. I've been up to one of their games this year. Actually, it was their game with South Carolina, so it was pretty interesting."
