Sunday Conversation: Bobby Bowden
Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden spoke with the media via teleconference Sunday afternoon, one day after the Seminoles lost to Virginia Tech. Bowden spoke about the rash of injuries, the status of quarterbacks Drew Weatherford and Xavier Lee, and several other topics. Here is a transcript of that conversation.
Q: Coach, given the uncertainty with Xavier Lee's situation and his suspension. How comfortable do you feel after seeing Christian Ponder perform pretty well at Virginia Tech?
A: I feel much more comfortable now after watching him perform. I was amazed with what happened in the third quarter, you know. You saw a redshirt freshman quarterback, who has played none, go out there and outscore them, what, 15-0, in the third quarter. He brought us from 20-6 to 21-20. And you wonder, when's he going to make a mistake? When's he going to throw an interception? When's he going to roll it? Those things that were supposed to occur finally did occur. But I was amazed with the third quarter. I imagine that Jimbo [Fisher] will try to work with he and [D'Vontrey] Richardson both - try to get them some work. And try to use them a little bit like Virginia Tech used theirs.
Q: Was there anything about Christian's skills that surprised you? He's obviously a little more mobile than Drew. Did you expect him to be able to run like that?
A: Well, you know, in our spring game last year, he ran real well. He surprised people. It is surprising because he doesn't look like a runner. But he does have a gate about him, and he does have a style about him that's effective - it was the other night. Of course that's a plus.
