Gundy speaks on Collins
STILLWATER - Late Monday afternoon, a statement on the future of Chris Collins on the Oklahoma State football team was released by the office of Marlene Strathe, interim OSU System CEO and President that indicated Collins' football career at OSU was over.
Following practice on Monday night, head coach Mike Gundy discussed the situation in-depth for the first time since Collins pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault charges in Bowie County, Texas. Specifically, the third-year head coach addressed the background check he did before offering Collins a scholarship two years ago.
"We did some very thorough background checks on him," Gundy said. "We found that he was a good person and made a terrible, terrible mistake. And we were willing to give him a second chance. As far as which direction this was going to go with the legal system. That was out of my control and anybody else's control. We knew there was always a chance that it could go to trial. We were willing to take that chance (based) on the background check that we made on him. That the people who had dealt with him all his life said he made a terrible mistake, but was not a bad person. And because of that, I made the decision to bring him in here."
