Jarrett Sparks Video

12 catches, 11 touchdowns. Heading in to the final game of the regular season, that was the line for Merced (Calif.) wide receiver Jarrett Sparks, with 11 of his past 12 catches all going for scores. He's a big play machine, and one of the top reasons why Merced high has a 10-0 perfect season going.

Sparks actually finished up the regular season by collecting 9 catches for 99 yards and one score in helping his Bears go undefeated this season by beating league rival Los Banos 48-34. While he's had a huge impact in a ton of games, Sparks admittedly didn't get the ball enough during the season.

"We really need to get him the ball more," said Merced head coach Rob Scheidt before the Los Banos game. "He's a terrific weapon out there. Eleven of his last twelve catches have been for touchdowns, and most of them were a pretty long distance."

"He just does everything well."

We met with Sparks this past week at his high school in Merced, and while it was obvious that Jarrett has both a cool demeanor, you can also sense the deep respect he has for the game. His maturity level for a player with his skills is tremendous, and you can tell that he's been well coached. Sparks generates a number of unselfish qualities, both on and off the field.

After returning from his trip to Oregon State this weekend, Sparks unfortunately was diagnosed with mononucleosis, and will certainly miss this week's playoff game. The Bears are hosting Modesto (Calif.) Davis.
