Beckford down to two

One of the top uncommitted prospects in the Garden State for the class of 2008 is linebacker Dwayne Beckford of Irvington High School.

Beckford is rated the #26 player in New Jersey for the class of 2008 and has scholarship offers from school such as Purdue, Michigan State, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Temple, UConn, Toledo and East Carolina. SpartanMag.com caught up with Beckford earlier tonight and got the latest on his recruitment.

Beckford initially narrowed his list down to three schools, Michigan State, Purdue and Temple. He took official visits to all three of them before the holidays and then used the dead period to evaluate which situation he believes is best for him.

"I am down to two schools," he said. "I plan on making my choice later this week. I will probably do it by Friday."

What two schools will he choose between?

"I am down to Purdue and Temple. It will be one of those two schools," Beckford said.

As far as which way Beckford might be leaning, he was not offering any hints. He did offer some insight as to why those schools made his final cut.

"I think I can go to those schools and help them right away," he said. "I want to play early and that is important to me."

Michigan State is graduating 3 linebackers who played extensively this year including senior starters Kaleb Thornhill and SirDarean Adams. Despite that, Beckford likes his chances of early playing time at other schools.

"I don't think I would have as good a chance to play early there," Beckford said. "I was just not really sure about them."

Though Beckford did not indicate that distance is a factor, it could very well be a key in his recruitment. Temple is a short drive down the New Jersey Turnpike.

Purdue on the other hand, is much further away, but the Boilermkrers are an estabished BCS program that goes to bowl games nearly every year.

Could another school still jump into the mix?

At this point it does not look likely. Beckford seemed comfortable when talking about the positives and negatives of his two final choices.

SpartanMag.com scouted Beckofrd at the NIKE Camp at Rutgers University this past spring. At that event he was one of the top performers at his position. Come Friday one staff is going to be feeling very good about adding this hard-hitting prospect to their commitment list.
