Shumate nearing decision?

Colin Shumate came away from his official visit to San Diego State in mid-December extremely impressed with what the Aztecs have to offer. The 6-foot-1, 225-pound linebacker from Las Vegas (Nev.) High has not taken any trips since then.

Is he nearing a decision?

"I am but I am waiting for the contact period to begin this week because Arizona State is supposed to be coming out to my school sometime this week. I am going to talk to them tomorrow probably and then they'll say whether or not they are coming. If they are, it would be this week.

"We'll see what happens. That is really what it has come down to, those two (San Diego State and Arizona State). I can see myself playing at either of those places.

"I like the location of both schools, I like what they both offer academically and I like that they both have a true middle linebacker in their defense."

Shumate has kept in weekly phone contact with the Aztecs since his official visit.

"Coach Long is supposed to be coming to the house this week," he added. "So I look forward to being able to talk with him.

"Their team is young and the coaching staff is really turning things around. This was only their second season; they are going into their third year. The guys they've recruited and the ideas that they have implemented are coming through. It always takes time. It seems like I would be going into a situation there at a good time. I could compete to play early this coming season. They said that they would like to use me early on and not redshirt me. That makes them an attractive option."

A first-team all-state selection three times during his high school career, Shumate recorded 117 tackles, 17 for a loss and five fumble recoveries as a senior. He is ranked by Rivals.com as the 33rd best inside linebacker prospect from his 2008 class and the seventh best recruit from Nevada.

What does Shumate consider his best attributes as a football player?

"Being physical, I love to hit," he expressed. "I try to hit as hard as I can every time I get the chance to on the field. I felt more well rounded this year as a senior. I had good sideline to sideline play and I was also effective in stuffing the run up the middle. I would definitely say my physicality and explosiveness as my best attributes as a player.
