Detroit DL hearing from Spartans
Head Coach Mark Dantonio has made the recruiting of Detroit a top priority for Michigan State. The Spartans scored big last year in the PSL and are already off to a strong start for 2009. Last night SpartanMag.com caught up with another PSL prospect that is looking at the Spartans, Aaron McCord of Crockett High School.
McCord is a 6-foot-3, 260-pound prospect that projects as a strong-side defensive end or defensive tackle at the next level. The All-Detroit selection has been getting plenty of early attention from colleges and he gave us some details.
"I have received stuff from Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Iowa, Purdue, Wisconsin, UConn and Cincinnati. I am going to Michigan State's junior day this Saturday. I have also have been invited to junior days at Cincinnati and Ball State."
The visit to Michigan State will be a first for McCord, who has never bee to East Lansing. He will be making the trip with his family and is looking forward to seeing what the Spartans have to offer.
McCord grew up a Michigan fan, but stated that what team he grew up following would have little to do with where he ultimately ends up playing
"People ask me what I would do if I was offered by Ohio State. I look at tit this way. I am going to go top the school that is the best fit for me. To me the decision is all about football. I love to play and wherever I feel is the best place fro me is where I will decide to go."
Over the past few years Detroit Crockett has produced a lot of talent and McCord informed us that he knows people at both Michigan and Michigan State.
"I know Brandon Graham that is at Michigan and I also know Trevor Anderson (Michigan State)," he said.
Graham and Anderson will both be two of the top defensive ends in the Big Ten this fall.
Michigan State Coach Dan Enos did a great job last year recruiting the PSL for the Spartans and it is obvious that he wants to build upon his success. During the month of January Enos was able to stop into many of the top PSL programs. McCord indicated that Coach Enos was at Crockett and he has had a chance to speak with him.
McCord was invited to the Rivals.com 5-Star Junior Day that will be held next month at Michigan State. In addition to that function, McCord plans o hitting several camps this spring and summer.
"I know for a fact that I am going to go to the NIKE Camp, McCord said. "I also plan on going to a few one-day camps of the schools I am looking at the most. Right now I would say that Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State are ones' I plan on going to."
McCord plays both ways for Crockett and it is possible that he could also get a look on the offensive line. At 6'3, 260-pounds, McCord has a solid frame and will likely be a 280+ pound prospect by the time he steps onto a college campus sin the fall of 2009.
McCord indicated that as of right now the school she has been speaking with like him as a defensive line recruit. That is the position he prefers, but he understands that it is all about what is best for the team and his future.
Spartanmag.com will have more on McCord in the coming weeks. We will be sure to scout him at the NIKE Camp and at the summer camps as well.
