FAMU DE will be a prospect to watch
Tallahassee (Fla.) FAMU high school has one prospect you might have heard of. Rivals250 linebacker Willie Farrell has picked up offers already from LSU, Illinois, Minnesota and South Carolina among others. However, Ferrell may soon have to share the spotlight with a fast rising prospect with limitless upside.
FAMU head coach Ira Reynolds' best coaching move of the 2007 season may have been just convincing Alex Williams to suit up for the team. Before the 2007 season, Williams was just a basketball player toying with the idea of hitting the gridiron. Now he is following up a 19 sack campaign in his first season ever of organized football.
"I asked him about playing football and he said 'Sure, I'll give it a try'," said Coach Reynolds. "We weren't sure what position he was going to play. He's very aggressive and very physical so we said 'what do you think about defensive end?' He had 19 sacks last season with poor technique."
Despite his basketball background, Williams has football in his blood. Former Lincoln High School and NFL tight end Boo Williams is a family member and Alex may get to follow in his tight end footsteps this season.
Williams stands at 6-foot-5, weighs 210 pounds and has great length and athleticism. That athleticism, born on the basketball court may be put to use at some tight end as a senior after using him primarily in red zone opportunities in 2007.
"We're going to explore using him more at tight end," Coach Reynolds said. "We're certainly going to utilize him a lot."
Though Williams has no offers, that could change as his junior film and story begins to make the rounds. However, the raw, long athlete is starting to pick up some interest already.
"Once schools kind of found out about him, a lot of people started calling," Reynolds said. "USC, Memphis, a lot of schools have been calling. He's just a kid that got into football and had some success."
Williams will be a fast rising name in the coming months as his potential becomes evident.
