Hawthorne getting defensive?

Rivals100 recruit Terry Hawthorne has dreamt about playing collegiate football for either Ohio State or Illinois since he was a kid. Unfortunately for him, he only has an offer from one of his choices - Illinois.

Even so, Ohio State is far from off his radar.

"I like the program (Ohio State has). It seems like a really cool place to go," Hawthorne said. "I like the stadium they (have). It has just been my dream school to go to ever since I was little."

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound receiver out of East St. Louis (Ill.) East St. Louis high school, however, has at least drawn attention from the Buckeyes, though it may not be as a wide out.

Ohio State sent an offer to Kraig Appleton, Hawthorne's teammate and fellow wide receiver of the 2009 class, leaving the Buckeyes no wiggle room in terms of an offensive offer for Hawthorne, presumably leaving him out of luck.

Nevertheless, Hawthorne said his coach, Darren Sunkett, spoke with him about the possibility of landing an Ohio State offer as a defensive back, something he would take into great consideration.

"My coach was saying something about (Ohio State) offering Appleton as a receiver," Hawthorne said. "So what (my coach) said was if Ohio State is going to offer me anything, it is going to be on defense. My coach said I have to send out my highlight film out to them and then they will decide from there."

Besides his conversations with his coach, Hawthorne's communication with Ohio State has been relatively thin. Hawthorne has no plans on visiting Ohio State for the Spring Game tomorrow.

"I haven't heard back from Ohio State," Hawthorne said. "I haven't talked to them yet, so we will see what happens."

Moreover, he said he is going to take the process as it comes to him while considering all of his offers carefully. Hawthorne made it clear that the football program was his chief concern, but not the only thing he plans on taking into consideration.

"I am looking for a school with a good education program with a good community," Hawthorne said.

When asked if Ohio State would jump right to the top of his list if he were to receive an offer of any sort, regardless of defense or offense, Hawthorne replied, "Yes sir."

In addition to Hawthorne's offer from Illinois, the senior-to-be has received offers from Arkansas, Kansas State,
Missouri, and most recently, Arizona.

"I am interested in everyone who has given
me an offer," Hawthorne said. "I am just going to wait and see if I hear from anyone else and we will go from there."
