Spartan recruiting targets flock to Akron
AKRON, Ohio - More than a dozen teams from the state of Michigan are taking part in this weekend's King James Shooting Stars Classic including both The Family and the Michigan Mustangs.
Both the Mustangs and The Family are among the 48 teams enrolled in the 17-and-under Open Division of the third annual King James Shooting Stars Classic. Led by Detroit Pershing Star Keith Appling, The R.E.A.C.H Legends will also represent the Great Lakes State in the Open Division of the 17-and-under field.
A number of Michigan State recruiting targets will take to the court this weekend in a tournament that will feature some of the best grass roots basketball teams in the nation. Last weekend, Michigan State had three assistant coaches on hand for the Pittsburg Jam Fest to evaluate rapidly Detroit big man Derrick Nix. After watching Nix in Pittsburgh, Michigan State offered the Pershing star on Monday morning and secured a commitment before the afternoon. A number of Michigan State assistants are expected to be on hand in Akron among a contingent of college coaches that will exceed 200 this weekend.
This year 552 teams have signed up for the King James Shooting Stars Classic. Those teams range in ages from 17-and-under to 10-and-under. The Shooting Stars Classic will be played in and around the city of Akron on 77 courts in a variety of venues including the campuses of Kent State and the University of Akron. Area high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools will also be used to host games.
Other local teams in the field at King James include Camp Darryl, Team Detroit, Grand Rapids Storm, Common Bond, Detroit Fire, West Michigan Lakers, Muskegon Magic, Berkley Hawk, Utica Chieftains, OAA Select Bearcats, Michigan Mavericks, and Michigan Showtime.
