Video: Nix, Kirk, Riley at King James Saturday night
AKRON - The Family's big three of Derrick Nix, Donnovan Kirk and DaShonte Riley played well as a group in their bracket play loss to the Ohio basketball club last Saturday.
The best of the bunch for the Family was Kirk, a Michigan State recruiting target who scored a team-high 14 points for his team. He led all first-half scorers with 10 points on 3 of 4 shooting from the field. As was the case throughout the King James Shooting Stars Classic, Kirk was at his best with Riley feeding him the basketball out of the high post.
Kirk ran the floor against OBC better than he had in any previous contest in the King James Shooting Stars Classic. The Country Day junior was also a tenacious rebounder finishing with a dozen boards including a number of offensive rebounds he converted into points for The Family. Kirk was also perfect at the free-throw line against OBC.
Nix scored 9 points and Riley finished with eight points. Nix scored all of his points in the opening half in which he was 2-of-4 from the floor and 4 of 6 from the free-throw line. Nix missed his first two shots but began to heat up thereafter until OBCs coaching staff decided to double team the Spartan commitment and force The Family's other interior players to beat them.
OBC did not double team Riley who was 0-for-2 from the floor in the first half. Riley's 2 first-half points came at the free-throw line where he split. The Country Day 7-footer registered all three of his field goals in the second half. Two Riley's field goals came in a span of five seconds, as the No. 14 rated player in the Class of 2009 threw down a dunk out in the half court before stealing an outlet pass and laying it in.
