Sun Devils sign 2008 JUCO tight end late
Stanley Malamala, a 6-foot-3, 260 pound tight end at Huntington Beach (Calif.) Golden West College has signed with Arizona State n the 2008 class and will arrive in Tempe for the program's summer bridge program early next month, ASUDevils.com has learned.
Malamala, who visited the Tempe campus officially on Tuesday, also considered scholarship offers from Oregon and Texas A&M.
"I was only there for a little bit because I had to come back for a final I had on Thursday," Malamala said. "But I loved it there and I signed. I think it's going to be a good fit."
Last season, Malamala had 17 catches for Golden West, which struggled to a 2-8 season. He earned second-team all-league honors.
Malamala was recruited to the program by Matt Lubick, who also was responsible for ASU signee Toa Tuitea. Malamala knows Tuitea and his brother Calvin, and what Tuitea had to say about the ASU program helped the Sun Devils land him.
"He just said he really liked everything there and that helped me feel good about it," Malamala said. "It's good to know someone else who will be there. I see him around here all the time."
Originally from Hawaii, Malamala played his high school football at Lahainaluna. He will have three years to play two seasons at ASU.
