Columbus QB hoping to pick up offers
Although the Boilermakers are keeping an eye toward Dustin Kiel, they haven't extended a scholarship offer to the Columbus (Ind.) East quarterback.
That's the approach being taken by a few programs, including Purdue, Cincinnati, Illinois and Louisville, all of which have been contracting Kiel of late. With offers from Indiana, Central and Eastern Michigan and Eastern Illinois - the Panthers are the latest to extend an invite - already in hand, Kiel is hoping more will come soon. He thinks the Boilermakers could be among them.
"I do," he said. "(QB) coach (Ed) Zaunbrecker seemed to really like me at their camp last year and (recruiting) coach (Mark) Hagen has been talking to me. They seem really interested. I think they are just waiting to see some other kids throw, but I think they will offer soon."
The 6-foot-1, 204-pound Kiel says he's yet to establish his plans for the summer, aside from taking part in his high school's team camp, which is going on now, and attending summer school. But he says he'll find time to visit the schools that offer.
"I want to go there and see where they think I fit in over the next four or five years," he said.
Kiel threw for nearly 2,600 yards last season, while completing about 60-percent of his passes. An unofficial visitor to Purdue on a couple occasions, Kiel says he has a good impression of the Boilermakers.
"They have a great quarterback tradition, with Drew Brees," he said. "It would definitely be a great place to go play. They run the spread offense and throw it a lot, so that's really interesting, because I'm like that too.
"I can throw it and run it too. If I get in trouble, I've got the mobility to be able to move around some."
With only the handful of offers as of now, Kiel says he isn't yet ready to name any favorites. But he'd like to be in position to make a decision in a few months.
"If I can, I want to try to make a decision by the end of the summer, before the season starts," he said.
