Another Florida DB gets Ole Miss offer
One prospect that has pretty much flown under the radar from media, but not from college coaches, is St. Petersburg (Lakewood HS), Fla. athlete Jacquez Jenkins.
Jenkins, a 6-foot-2, 178 pound athlete recently picked up an offer from Ole Miss, that joins a host of other schools that have offered including Illinois, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa State, USF, Kansas, North Carolina, and Wake Forest.
"I got the Ole Miss offer about two or three weeks ago," Jenkins said. "It's the SEC and that's a league will prepare me the best for the NFL."
However, it's not Ole Miss or Arkansas that Jenkins currently has his eye on.
"I like USF," he said. "I love the location and it's and up and coming program. They are my leader."
If Ole Miss stands a chance to get Jenkins, any hope will ride on the shoulders of Rebel recruiting coordinator Chris Vaughn, who bonded immediately with Jenkins.
"When I first talked with Coach Vaughn, the focus wasn't just on football, it was about life in general," Jenkins said. "It shows me that he's interested in me as a person, not just as a football player. We talk about just about anything - video games, sports, music. He really makes me feel comfortable.
Vaughn is after Jenkins to fill a big void for the Rebels - the secondary - where Ole Miss loses both Jamara Sanford at safety this year and Dustin Mouzon at cornerback.
"I think I can play safety as the next level," Jenkins said. "But some teams think I can play corner."
Vaughn is trying to take the next step with Jenkins - to get him to the Ole Miss campus for an unofficial visit, or better yet, to Ole Miss' senior "elite" camp on July 26.
"I haven't sat down and talked with my Dad yet, so I really don't know where I'm going," Jenkins said. "I might go to Florida's camp. The only campus I've been to so far is the USF campus.
Jenkins had 700 passing yards, 400 rushing yards, 300 receiving yards, 200 kick return yards, and one interception last fall as a junior.
He's not sure of his overall GPA, but said he had a 3.1 GPA for his his last semester and recently took the SAT, but hasn't received the results.
