Coaches hit road for critical evaluation period

On Sunday, Arizona State coaches hit the road for the first of two 10-day evaluation periods that make July one of the most important months of the year in basketball recruiting. NCAA rules allow three of the four coaches on a staff to be on the road evaluating recruits on any given day, and the Sun Devils will no doubt take full advantage.

Herb Sendek, Scott Pera and Lamont Smith were observed California, Kansas and Texas respectively on day one of the 10-day period. Dedrique Taylor will take to the road Monday and Smith will be off for several days.

Between the four coaches, ASU will likely be represented at no fewer than a dozen camps and tournaments in more than a dozen states over the 10 days, presumably including the Lebron James Skills Academy, Nike Peach Jam, RBK U, Double Pump West All-Star Camp, Hoosier Shootout, Double Pump 3 Stripes, Twin Cities Summer Classic, Southwest Invitational, and Northwest Shootout, among others.

With Top-75 national recruits Jared Cunningham and Trent Lockett committed to the program, ASU's coaches are likely focusing their efforts on filling out the 2009 class with at least one more prospect, and possibly two more if transfer candidate Alex Stepheson selects either USC or UCLA instead of the Sun Devils.

The top targets in the class appear to be Renardo Sidney, who will be at RBK U from July 6-10, and Tyler Honeycutt, who recently visited ASU for the Herb Sendek Skills Camp. Both have offers.

Beyond Sidney and Honeycutt are actively recruiting 6-foot-11 Montverde Academy center Ruslan Peteev, Ferrakohn Hall and Johnny Williams, among others.

In the 2010 class, the Sun Devils will likely take commitments from no fewer than three recruits, and probably four. Players with apparent offers include Daniel Bejarano, Joshua Smith, Will Regan, Cody Larson[/db], Anthony Brown.

Others who appear to be close to receiving offers from ASU include Terrance Ross and Terrance Jones.

ASUDevils.com will follow the progress of all these and any other ASU recruits in the coming month and beyond.
