2010 kicker among the nation's best

SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. - Though the Chris Sailer Top 12 Kicking Camp at Notre Dame High School in California was an event to showcase the top kickers in the country in the class of 2009, a select few 2010 prospects made the cut. One of those prospects was Redondo Beach (Calif.) Redondo Union kicker Nick Diaz.

"It's all about competing," Diaz said at the camp. "There are great kickers here. Everyone's got the same mindset as far as coming out and doing great. It's just about preparing what I have to do and just executing what I have to do. It's awesome, it's a great experience."

Just by his presence at the event, Diaz clearly shows that he is highly regarded as a kicker but his success hasn't come without a price.

"I train all year around for kicking so there is very little downtime," he said. "It's always about using Chris (Sailer)'s philosophy on and off the field, watching films, doing all the drills and then going out and performing."

As a sophomore last season, Diaz was already making an impact on the varsity squad.

"It was pretty good," he said of the season. "I went six of eight on field goals and I was good on touchbacks. We had excellent special teams. We worked together good as a unit. They gave me a good opportunity to execute. My long was a 37-yard field goal. I'm pretty accurate from the money zone, from about 42-32 yards. I'm about 80 percent in there."

Though it is still early for Diaz as far as recruiting, he lists Oregon State and all the Pac-10 and WAC schools as the programs he is most interested in, along with Notre Dame.
