Three-star tight end visiting ISU
Iowa State will get an unofficial visit this weekend from a top 50 tight end and could secure a verbal commitment as well. Flower Mound (Tex.) product Craig Wenrick is headed for Ames to spend time on campus with the Cyclone coaching staff. It's the only necessary thing he hasn't done yet to make up his mind on whether or not to commit to ISU before his high school senior season gets underway.
The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Wenrick is rated a three-star prospect by Rivals.com and ranked as the no. 47 tight end prospect in the country. Only Iowa State and Buffalo have made him offers to this point while he's also received interest from Kansas State and New Mexico. Wenrick played behind not one but two Flower Mound tight ends that signed with Division I-A programs last year. So he hasn't had much chance to shine on Friday nights. But Iowa State saw all it needed to both from game video and in person.
"They saw film from last season and saw enough to like me," Wenrick said about the Cyclone coaches. "I caught two passes all season, I was used mostly for blocking. I probably played 15 or 20 plays a game. But they had actually seen me for the first time in the spring when I was a sophomore, before last season. And then they came back and saw me this spring and offered me. A whole bunch of big schools told me they didn't have enough tape. I consider it their loss now if I commit somewhere else."
Wenrick said he's talked to Iowa State about committing but all agreed he needed to see the school in person first before making such a decision.
