Speaks softly, carries big hit
Johnathan McKenzie isn't much for talking.
Maybe it's because he has already learned that actions speak louder than words.
And the Starkville Academy senior's abilities speak for themselves.
McKenzie has already shown he can excel on the field as well as in the classroom. The 6-4, 220-pounder boasts a 500-pound squat and 315-pound bench press as well as a 4.0 GPA and a 27 on his ACT.
"Grades are very important to me," McKenzie said. "If you get to college to play football, you can only play for four years. You have the rest of your life to do your job. I'm still just sort of thinking that out."
The Mississippi State Bulldogs offered the hometown product a football scholarship over the winter and McKenzie was flattered.
"My parents got the envelope of what they thought was (the scholarship)," McKenzie said. "I had just lost a basketball game when I got it so I was pretty down. I wasn't expecting it. I don't see myself as quite good enough to do that but it was pretty exciting."
