JC safety ponders Iowa State visit

After stockpiling some depth at cornerback with its 2008 recruiting class, Iowa State is looking to do the same at safety in 2009. The Cyclones have offered a blend of high school and junior college safeties and that includes Garden City (Kan.) Community College hitter Hiram Atwater.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Atwater is a Decatur, Georgia, native. He is in his second season playing for the Broncs at Garden City and plans to be a December graduate who will sign before the holidays and enroll at the Division I school of his choice for the second term and participate in spring practice, wherever that may be. Atwater said he's received three scholarship offers in total so far with a number of other schools also recruiting him.

"Iowa State, Akron and UAB are my offers," Atwater said. "Do I have any favorites? Not really. I'm just trying to deal with my season first and then I will see where I fit in the best. I look at depth charts, see what schools have. I want a place where I know I can improve myself and play a role."

Is that Ames, Iowa? Maybe, maybe not, but there's a growing chance Atwater will have the chance to answer that question for himself after seeing what Iowa State and its home city have to offer.

In addition to the three schools that have offered, Atwater said he's talked to coaches from Kansas State, Kansas, Oklahoma State, Memphis, North Carolina State and Ole Miss.
