Is Russell close to a decision?
Coach Todd Lickliter has one scholarship open for the Class of 2009 and his hope is that it will be filled by Nick Russell, who made his official visit to the Iowa campus last month. After making trips to Texas Tech and Kansas State in recent weeks, is the Top 150 point guard prospect from Arlington, Texas any closer to making his final decision?
"I wouldn't say that I am ready to make a decision right now, but I am getting closer," Russell said on Tuesday evening. "Right now all three schools are pretty equal and there is no clear leader."
The three schools in contention are Iowa, Kansas State, and Texas Tech. Russell mentioned on Tuesday night that he may take an official visit to SMU, but that visit is still up in the air. Do the Hawkeyes and the Wildcats have any advantage because they have been in the recruiting battle to land him longer?
"Maybe, because I have known their coaches longer, but I like the coaches at Tech too," he said. "I feel like I can come in and make an impact at all three schools early on."
Making a college choice is never and easy one and Russell is relying on his inner circle of his parents and his coach, Ray Forsett to assist the point guard in the process.
"I have been talking with my mom and dad and my coach looking at the pro's and con's of each school and trying to bring this to an end. It has been a big help to me," he said. "They have a good feeling about what is best for me and I get to know how they feel. But, ultimately it is going to be my decision."
With the early signing period just around the corner in November, Russell may be close to naming a time when he plans to bring his recruitment to an end. After mentioning recently that he may wait until December or January, he might have an earlier date in mind.
"No real time frame, but Coach Ray and I are talking about a time frame of maybe late October, but that could change. I will most likely sign in November."
