Dawgs putting together impressive DL unit
The University of Georgia is always looking to improve at each position in each recruiting class. Combining the 2008 and 2009 classes, they will be signing five of the top six defensive linemen in Georgia over the last two years. They recently picked up a commitment from Derrick Lott and he joins an impressive group.
Toby Jackson was clearly the number one defensive lineman in Georgia in 2008. The 6-foot-4, 265 pound defensive lineman was one of the top three prospects in Georgia and many felt he was the best.
The Griffin native was recruited to play defensive end and he has been compared to former LSU star and current Dallas Cowboy Marcus Spears. Jackson has the frame to add weight while keeping his speed, so whether he stays on the edge or moves inside, we expect him to be extremely productive early in Athens.
He would likely be on the field playing now for UGA, but he was forced to attend Hargrave Military Academy to get his academics in order. Up at the Prep School in Chatham (Va.), he is showing dominance week in and week out. Hargrave Head Coach Robert Prunty compares him to former Hargrave and UGA star Charles Grant in this exclusive interview right HERE.
Jackson is close to being qualified and he is expected to be in Athens for the January semester and we expect him to make noise during spring practice.
The two talented defensive linemen joining him on the 2009 commitment list will not be there in January, but they will add athleticism to the position when they get there next summer.
Abry Jones is like Jackson a year ago at this time
he has separated himself from the pack as the top defensive lineman in Georgia. The 6-foot-3, 273 pound versatile DL out of Northside Warner Robins plays end now, but has been told by Georgia that they would like him to move inside.
