Vanderbilt commit eyeing Ole Miss, UK

Hoover (Spain Park HS), Ala. defensive tackle Darrius McMullin committed to Vanderbilt last summer, but has recently decided he'll likely take at least two official visits to other schools before he makes a final decision about his collegiate future.

"I just want to look around," McMullin said on Tuesday evening. "I'm pretty strong with Vanderbilt, but I feel I owe it to myself to be sure that there's not something I like better and that Vanderbilt is the school for me."

McMullin, a 6-foot-2, 276 pound defensive tackle prospect said that he'll probably visit both Ole Miss and Kentucky.

His Spain Park team, defending state champions from a year ago, finished 4-6 on the season and McMullin's high school career is over except for one more game - the Alabama - Mississippi All-Star game in December. He was recently selected to participate in the game.

Despite no playoffs, McMullin hasn't set up an official dates and isn't sure when he'll take the trips to Oxford and Lexington.

"Coach (Ole Miss offensive line coach Mike) Markuson has been calling me and trying to get me to set up a visit date," McMullin said. "He's been calling and they've been sending some letters telling me they want me to come over. I just haven't set up any dates yet and I'm not for sure when I'll visit."

McMullin has seven written offers - from Ole Miss, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, UAB, UCF, and Louisiana Tech. He added an offer this fall from Tulane.

One thing that has attracted McMullin's attention is the Rebels recent wins and playing No. 1 Alabama to within four points.

"I've caught several of their games on TV and watched the Auburn game last week," he said. "I think they played really well. I watched the defensive line and they played really good too. They were really good at stopping the Auburn running game."

McMullin said he could see himself being a part of the defensive line at Ole Miss; however, he won't make that decision until he takes some official visits, including one to Vanderbilt. He plans to trip to Nashville this weekend to catch the Vanderbilt - Florida game, although that will be an unofficial visit.

McMullin said he's never been to Oxford, but has heard some about the school and town from his teammate, Jesse Grisham.

Grisham, who Ole Miss is recruiting as a center prospect but has yet to offer, is originally from Iuka and grew up attending some Ole Miss games before moving to Birmingham.

"Me and Jesse are good friends, on and off the field," McMullin said. "We might take an official together."

The two will be teammates again for the All-Star game, as Grisham was also selected to play in the contest.

McMullin scored a 21 on his ACT, which was taken as a sophomore, and re-took the test two weeks ago and doesn't have his score from that test. He maintains a 3.0 GPA.
