Auburn basketball opens season

Auburn opens the 2008-9 season Friday night against Missouri State with head coach Jeff Lebo planning to play an up-tempo style with the deepest bench he's had entering his fifth season on the Plains.

"We are going to try to play fast," Lebo said. "We are going to try to extend defensively. Offensively, we always try to utilize the three and take the first good shot that comes around."

The Tigers starting lineup will include two seniors in point guard Quantez Robertson and forward Korvotney Barber, junior forward Lucas Hargrove, along with the addition of two junior college transfers in shooting guard Tay Waller and forward Johnnie Lett.

Waller scored 27 points, shooting 7-of-12 from 3-point range, in last Friday's exhibition game against Morehouse.

Junior college big men Brendon Knox and Francis Aihe are also expected to see their first action in an AU uniform Friday but much heralded prep signee, guard Frankie Sullivan, will miss the opener with a high ankle sprain.

Lebo hopes to have Sullivan back in the lineup in the next week or two.
