Houston picks up versatile commitment
One of the more unique prospects in the class of 2009 has made his college choice. Beaumont (Texas) Ozen wide receiver Willie Jefferson is 6-foot-7, muscular and athletic. He could project as an athletic tight end or a big wide receiver. Whatever position he projects as, he projects to play it at the University of Houston.
"I committed to Houston," Jefferson said on Wednesday. "I did it like Tuesday of last week. It was because it's close by. I don't have to fly anywhere to get there. They paly in the same offense as where I am and I'll get the ball a lot in it."
Jefferson, a tight end/wide receiver hybrid won't even have to pick a position for Art Briles' offense. The staff has got its own position in mind for the talent.
"I'll be playing both," he said. "I'm not on the line but I'm playing right there. It's like a tight end but I'm also a wide receiver."
Houston is the only school Jefferson has visited but football won't be the only sport he's playing. Just as Jefferson won't be deciding between tight end and wide receiver, neither will he be deciding between football and basketball.
"I'm going to play basketball," he said. "The coaches are ok with it. I talked to the coach of U of H and he's cool with it. I play power forward in basketball."
While Jefferson is excited about the opportunities that Houston presents, he is also keeping his options open moving forward.
"I'm still going to take visits," he said. "I'm committed to U of H but other than that I'm still looking around."
