Commitment 360: Colvin on Iowa St.

Chicago (Ill.) Whitney Young guard Chris Colvin gave himself the greatest birthday present of his life a couple of days early. He signed a national letter of intent to play basketball for Greg McDermott and the Iowa State Cyclones beginning in the year 2009.

Colvin, the 6-foot-2, 174-pound point guard picked Iowa State over the likes of Kentucky, Marquette, Providence, USC, Washington State, Baylor, Florida State and Illinois and UConn. He announced his choice Wednesday - his 18th birthday - on the "Chicago Tribune Live" TV program on Comcast Sports Net out of Chicago.

All of those prestigious programs throwing themselves at a great player is very typical. The reasons that Colvin, the 92nd ranked prospect in the country chose Iowa State were anything but typical.

Yes, basketball was important but for once, the sport was on the back burner. Colvin says that he chose Iowa State mainly for two reasons.

Education and family.

"They (Iowa State) recruited me in a different way. Most schools recruited me as a sports figure. The biggest thing for my family is education. That's the point that Iowa State brought to us," Colvin said minutes after announcing his decision. "They didn't bring the basketball standpoint. They brought the educational standpoint and that gave them a big plus."

Colvin wants to either major in communications or business during his years at Iowa State.

"I would like to go into advertising or I'd just like to run my own business," Colvin said.
