Mississippi DB still mulling over switch

Batesville (South Panola HS), Miss. safety David Conner has been committed to Auburn since last August, but when signing day rolls around in two months, it should not come as a surprise to see Conner's name on Ole Miss' signing list.

Conner, who did not have an offer from Ole Miss at the time he committed to Auburn, has since picked up an offer and is being courted heavily by the Rebels.

"I got a verbal offer directly from Coach (Houston) Nutt last September," Conner said on Monday. "I then got an official later from them a few days later."

That offer clearly has Conner re-thinking his position.

"I'm not hearing from as many schools as I once was," Conner said. "Auburn hasn't called in a while. I'm still committed to Auburn, but I'm keeping my options open. I"m wide open. I'm going to look at any schools that look at me."

Conner has received offers from Ole Miss, Auburn, and Mississippi State and several other schools, including Miami, have shown interest.

Conner, a 5-foot-9, 185 pound safety with 4.5 speed, camped at Ole Miss last summer, but did not receive an offer. However, after coaches scouted him in the fall an offer was extended and Conner has warmed up to the Rebels.

Conner could not attend last Friday's Egg Bowl game in Oxford due to the ongoing state playoffs, but he said he watched the game on television.

"I expected them to be victorious, but not that victorious," said Conner of the Rebels 45-0 win over Mississippi State. "I just didn't see that coming. Everyone played as a team. I really liked the way the defense played. I could definitely see myself playing in that defense."

Conner said he plans to take an official visit to Ole Miss, but hasn't made any plans for official visits at this time because of the state playoffs. South Panola takes on Meridian this Friday.

"I definitely want to get over to Ole Miss and check things out on an official visit," he said. "I just want to be around the coaches and some of the players and see how I fit in. I'm pretty sure that it will be January when I take my official."

Conner said that his season has gone "pretty good" and said he currently has 93 tackles on the season, up from about 80 last year.

"I had been hoping to get to play some on offense, but all I've done is run a couple of times on a fake punt - I ran one for a touchdown last week - but there hasn't really been a game where they've need me on offense, so I've just concentrated on defense."

While Conner may indeed change his pledge from Auburn to Ole Miss, he doesn't plan to make an announcement until signing day.

"Everyone will find out on signing day," he laughed.
