Sam says ISU out of the picture
A change in the coaching ranks has Hitchcock (Tex.) linebacker Michael Sam changing his mind about Iowa State, but maybe not about the coach. Michael Sam has seen his recruiting coach, the defensive coordinator and now the head coach from Iowa State leave Ames. Now, the 6-foot-3, 230-pounder is leaving the Cyclones in his own rear-view mirror.
"I don't know what is going on with Iowa State," Sam said. "I haven't talked to them yet. I was going to talk to them this week. I just found out last night. My coach called me last night and said he (former Iowa State Coach Gene Chizik) was at Auburn University."
"I don't see Iowa State in my picture now," Sam added. "Chizik left, the defensive coordinator left, my recruiting coach left. I don't think Iowa State is in my recruiting anymore."
News filtered out of Ames on Saturday night that Chizik will leave Ames to coach at Auburn after going 5-19 overall at Iowa State. Sam has offers from Iowa State, Colorado State, Houston and Arizona State. He said he wants to call Chizik to find out if former Auburn defensive coordinator wants him in Alabama.
"I thought Auburn already had their commits, but I also know he liked me," Sam said. "But I don't know if I was Iowa State material or Auburn material. I don't know. Am I that good to play for Iowa State, or can I play for Auburn."
"I will know for sure I'll give Chizik a call. If it is a yes or a no, I am a big boy."
Sam named Colorado State his favorite last week and said he still plans on coming to Fort Collins in Jan. for an official visit. He will also be visiting TCU and Arizona State. He plans on taking all of his visits before making a decision.
