Another Three Star Commitment For Blazers
"I intend to play for coach Callaway," said UAB's newest recruit. This three star prospect and his parents hosted the UAB head man, Neil Callaway and assistant coach Tim Bowens. How did it go? Did UAB's top coach make a good impression? "It was terrific, everything was great. He made a good impression, no doubt."
David Conner, a three star safety from South Panola High in Batesville, Mississippi will be joining the Blazers for the 2009 season. Conner only recently appeared on the UAB recruiting radar. Last summer prior to the 2008 season he committed to Auburn - but de-committed after Tommy Tubberville resignation. He is ranked the 34th best safety in the nation and he had offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Southern Miss and Memphis. He will be an impact player at UAB with a chance to contribute as a true freshman.
Conner is the second commitment in the 2009 class from South Panola. He will be joining his teammate and cousin, Marvin Burdette in next months signing class. "We're cousins, but we're more like brothers," he said. I'm excited about playing with him and being together for the next four years.
Callaway was the real closer for the Blazers. "To my parents and me he's just straight up," he said. "We talked about college life and he said sometimes things happen - but that's going to be true anywhere - there are no perfect colleges. He was just up front about everything and how they handle things."
This year has been a good year academically for Conner. He appears to be on track with his core classes. He still needs a little improvement on his test score. "I'm taking the ACT again in February," he said. He plans on enrolling at UAB in June.
"I'm real excited about coming down. I want to be a part of something good and they are building something good there. With Conner's help the Blazers will get there a lot quicker.
