Goetz high on the Red Raiders

The Red Raiders are poised to add another to their 2009 recruiting class, as Cibolo (TX) Steele offensive lineman Matt Goetz indicated on Sunday that he would soon be calling the coaching staff and giving his verbal commitment.

"I saw everything, I liked it," said Goetz, fresh off an official visit to Texas Tech. "I told them that I'd go home, think about it for a little bit tonight and then I'd call them back with the news. Tomorrow should be the day that I call and let them know that I'm committing."

It was Goetz's first trip to the South Plains, and according to him it exceeded his expectations.

"I liked it, everyone is nice," he said. "It was great. It was everything that I didn't think it would be, which surprised me."

The two-star prospect, who participated in the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl earlier this month, went through quite a growth spurt over the past nine months. Indeed, for coaches who evaluated in him the spring and again in the winter, it was almost he was a different person altogether.

"I guess I put on about two and a half, three inches," laughed the 6-4, 270-pound Goetz. "I bulked up, but on 30 or 35 pounds. I've grown a lot, got thicker."

Goetz was shown around town by center Shawn Byrnes and other Texas Tech offensive linemen.

"They were all nice," commented Goetz. "They had nothing but good thigns to say about the place. They just showed me a good time."

Goetz had originally intended to take one final official visit before National Signing Day - to either Buffalo, New Mexico or Middle Tennessee State - but said that those plans had been canceled.
