Bulldogs entertain trio from Bessemer
Three former teammates will have a chance to reunite this weekend on their official visit to Mississippi State
Three-star Auburn commitments Harris Gaston and Brandon Heavens along with Jeremy Cox helped Bessemer Academy claim a Alabama Independent School Association 3A State Championship as juniors before Heavens transferred to Jess Lanier for his senior season.
The trio have all committed to the Tigers together and could possibly do the same when they visit Starkville this weekend.
Bessemer Academy coach Josh Wright has been through the recruiting process since day one with all three players and weighs in on the Bulldogs chances.
"When Brandon committed then so did Harris," Wright said. "They have both been pretty firm. Everything kind of died down until Auburn fired (Tommy Tuberville). Then Coach (Carl) Torbush has been by three or four times and has done a good job recruiting Harris. He invited him on an official visit."
Wright said Gaston is eager to take the trip to MSU and even more so after receiving an in-home visit from Torbush and Dan Mullen Thursday afternoon.
"He's real excited about his visit," Wright said. "In fact, Coach Mullen and Coach Torbush did an in-home with him (Thursday). He's excited. He and his family are coming down. He's still committed to Auburn but he wants to make sure he is making the right decision."
In fact State was the first school to offer Gaston early on in the recruiting process. Wright believes that coupled with the fact that he will be visiting them the weekend before signing day could help the Bulldogs chances.
"I think it's important that they are getting Harris this last visit," Wright said. "I think it's important for them to get some momentum going into signing day."
Gaston also holds an offer from Kentucky and visited Lexington on Jan. 16.
