Set to sign: Martin Hopkins
Unlike many prospects, the expert evaluations of Martin Hopkins are all over the board. Some analysts have him pegged as a very high end prospect, while others don't. While Hopkins doesn't pay any attention to rankings and evaluations, he is happy to be signing with the Hawkeyes on Wednesday. He talk about his signing day plans, his contact with the Iowa coaches, and the post season awards he has earned.
Q: Are you all set to sign on Wednesday?
HOPKINS: Yes, I am. I'll be signing at my high school in the morning. We have a couple of other kids on my team that are signing too.
Q: What have you heard from Iowa recently?
HOPKINS: I have been keeping in touch with my recruiting coach, Lester Erb. We have been talking on a regular basis about Iowa. I'm completely set on Iowa.
Q: Do you hear from any other schools late in the process?
HOPKINS: It has been pretty quiet. I think everything really settled down once I committed to Iowa.
Q: You earned a couple of post season honors this year. Talk about those honors.
HOPKINS: I was named the defensive player of the year and it was a big honor because I got that not only in our conference, but Tom Lemming also honored me. The conference award was very nice because we have a lot of great teams in our league with a lot of great players. It's probably one of the hardest conferences in the state, to be honest. Then to get honored by Tom Lemming was even better because that was a state wide award. It was a great individual accomplishment, but I had a lot of help from my teammates who helped make it possible.
Q: Your scouting evaluations are really all over the place with some people rating you high and others lower. Do you pay much attention to those things?
HOPKINS: I don't really pay much attention to it. I just try to go out and play my game and not let any of that stuff get in my head. In the long run the only person that you can worry about it yourself and I just try to go out there and play.
Q: Iowa has you slated for the defensive line. Is that still the plan?
HOPKINS: Yeah, that is the plan to start out at defensive end right now. I think I can adjust to it because I have played it in the past and a couple of times this year. The level of play will be faster at the college level, but I think I will adjust to it just fine.
Q: There is another Chicago area prep signing with Iowa, Scott Covert. Have you been able to meet him yet?
HOPKINS: Actually I went to Iowa's camp in the spring and met him. Then when I was on my official visit, he was there as well, so I got to know him even better. I also saw him at an awards banquet, so we are starting to talk to each other more now.
Q: What are the plans with your family on signing day?
HOPKINS: My coaches and my family will be there for the signing. It will be an exciting day for all of us.
