Hicks gets the word

One of the top in-state prospect for the class of 2010 is defensive back Mylan Hicks of Detroit Renaissance High School. SpartanMag.com spoke with Hicks yesterday after he had just received some great news from Michigan State Head Coach Mark Dantonio.

"I just got offered by Coach Dantonio," Hicks said. "I was at practice watching the team workout and he took me aside and said they had a full scholarship for me. We talked for about 15 minutes, it went real well. I like Coach a lot."

The offer by the Spartans comes on the heels of Hicks have an outstanding performacne at the Badger Sports 7-on-7 Tournamanet in Columbus, Ohio last weekend.

At the tournament Hicks locked up on wide receivers all day and hardly had a single pass completed against him. One of the players Hicks went up agaisnt was Rivals100 wide receiver and Spartan target Kyle Prater of Illinois. Prater had his way all day agasnt other DB's but he and Hicks had some terrific battles.

Hicks' play at defensive back has earned him the nickname "clamps". The 5-foot-1, 185-pound prospect enjoys being known as the player who is responsible for shutting down the oppositions top player.

Hicks was in East Lansing yesterday with his Coach Antoine Edwards and future Spartan linebacker Chris Norman.

SpartanMag.com asked Hicks if the Michigan State offer made them the favorite?

"It was great to get an offer from Michigan State," he said. "They are definitely up there, definitely."

Coach Edwards expanded on Hicks ability and his recruitment.

"Mylan is the real-deal," Edwards said. "He has a lot of ability and works hard. He is going to be a very good one in college. The Michigan State offer is big. Michigan and Notre Dame could also be close to offering."

The Michigan State offer is an strong indication of just how much the staff likes Hicks. Coach Dantonio is extremely selective about cornerback offers due to being a former defensive backs coach himself. Hicks is one of only a handful of DB prospects that have a Spartan offer.

Last year Coach Dan Enos did a great job of getting high-level Detroit area recruits to commit to Michigan State. A commitment from a player with the ability of Hicks would certainly be an impressive addition to the Spartan class and continue that fortuitous trend.
