Florida speedster names leader after SEC offer

Alex McGriff entered last week with a pair of offers from Big Ten schools and one from an academic power known for its hoops prowess in the ACC.

A Florida native, McGriff was still waiting on an offer from one of the 12 Southeastern Conference member-institutions.

He's waiting no longer.

Ole Miss offered a scholarship to McGriff, a 5-foot-10, 175-pound speedster from Deltona (Trinity Christian), Fla., last week, joining Michigan State, Minnesota and Duke in the race for his services. McGriff, a wide receiver/cornerback/return specialist, is also drawing considerable interest from Colorado, Miami and Purdue. The Rebels, however, are the early favorite.

"They're doing the best job of recruiting me right now," McGriff said. "I talk to them every day. They have a good program."

McGriff said he plans to visit Ole Miss this summer.

"I want to see how they work out and that kind of thing."

In the meantime, Ole Miss defensive line coach Terry Price, who is recruiting McGriff for the Rebels, is apparently planning a trip to Deltona to see McGriff practice soon.

"We talk a lot," McGriff said. "We're getting to know each other real well. It's cool. We have a good relationship."

McGriff said that while most schools like him primarily as a receiver and return specialist, he wants to work on his cornerback play.

"I've been playing a lot of offense, but I need to work on my defensive skills," McGriff said. "I'm getting faster, way faster. Right now, I'm running track. I think I can be a 4.38 or a 4.39 (in the 40-yard dash).

McGriff had 162 carries for 1,172 yards and 14 touchdowns last season. He returned four punts for touchdowns, two kickoffs for touchdowns and three of his five interceptions for scores. McGriff also played some quarterback, completing 16 of 28 passes for 341 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

McGriff said he has a 2.8 core grade-point average and a 720 on the SAT. He plans to take the standardized test again June 6.
