VIDEO: Keith Appling Highlights from Run-N-Slam
FT. WAYNE - The Michigan Mustangs advanced to the Sweet 16 in the Gold Division of the 17-and-under division at the Bill Hensley Memorial Run-N-Slam All-Star Classic despite traveling just five full-time players, one part-time player, and last-minute Saturday addition.
The Mustangs opened up the tournament with a close-call in their Friday opener, before upping their level of play on Saturday. The Mustangs closed out pool play with double-digit wins over the Wisconsin Force and the Peoria Irish.
The Mustangs played their best game of weekend against Team Philly in the first game of the Gold Division playoffs. Behind an outstanding individual effort by 2010 Michigan State commitment Keith Appling, the Mustangs subdued Team Philly to advance to the Sweet 16 before fatigue finally caught up with the undermanned team against a Shining Stars team that lacked the talent of the Mustangs but managed to knock down open perimeter jumpers.
SpartanMag.com filmed each of the four games played by the Mustangs on Saturday. Although several players stood out for Mustangs, none was better than Appling scored in double figures in each of the games he played at the Run-N-Slam.
Appling's 37-point performance against Team Philly was one of most impressive individual efforts of the tournament. Not only did the Detroit Pershing standout have his biggest scoring output of the weekend against a quality opponent, but Appling also scored the bulk of his points while matched up against Team Philly star Tony Chenault, a Wake Forest commitment.
