Rivals100 receiver thrilled with offer

When wide receiver prospect Shakim Phillips got word that Georgia wanted to offer him a scholarship, he couldn't believe his ears.

"I was excited," Phillips told UGASports. "It felt great to get an offer that I really wanted."

The Bulldogs certainly haven't been the only ones interested in the 6-foot-2, 191-pound receiver from Wayne, N.J., the No. 33-ranked player in the Rivals.com's list of top 100 players.

At last check, Phillips said he has almost 20 offers, but added that fact that Georgia came in somewhat late won't hurt the school's chances at all.

"I have not begun to evaluate the schools yet, so them being the 18th offer doesn't matter," Phillips said.

Apparently not: Phillips stated that Georgia "is one school I know I will one (official visit)" later on this year.

He also plans on visiting the school over the summer to visit the campus and meet the rest of the coaches.

"I plan to start evaluating and eliminating schools during my senior season and hope to have a Top 5 or 3 after the year is over with," he said.

A versatile performer, last year Phillips rushed 22 times for 289 yards and one touchdown while catching 40 passes for 765 yards and 10 scores. He also averaged almost 30 yards per kick return with one touchdown.

Arizona, Boston College, Iowa, Michigan State and Pittsburgh are among the schools vying for his services.

Phillips said Georgia assistants John Lilly and Tony Ball visited his team's workouts Wednesday. He said he spoke with Lilly at its conclusion.

"Coach Lilly said he watched my film, and he liked my size, my hands and my footwork," Phillips said. "He told me they would love to have me at Georgia."

Phillips, who said he has no qualms with playing in the South, was pleased to learn that he was ranked 33rd in the country.

"To be ranked 33rd in the country and one of the top 5 receivers is an honor," Phillips said. "But I think just being mentioned in the top 100 is great."
