Ward Offers Georgia DE

Gamecock assistant Lorenzo Ward has been busy during the May evaluation period on the recruiting trail, and his latest stop was Carver High School in Georgia. Several prospects received offers, among them DE [/db]Brandon Smith[/db].

The Gamecocks are one of the athletic lineman's most recent offers, along with another premier SEC program.

"My two latest offers are from Florida last week and South Carolina today," he told GamecockCentral on Tuesday.

Coach Lorenzo Ward was instantly remembered by the three-star end.

"Coach Ward is a real reliable guy," he said. "I know when he was at Arkansas I found out he was going to offer me. He went to another school and still offered me. That lets me know he saw something in me and keeps his word."

Admittedly, the Peach State defender knows little about South Carolina's program.

"I really haven't had a chance to get deep into them," he said. "I just got offered today. I will visit there."

Smith has several questions he would like answered about Carolina's program.

"I want to know how they can help me better myself as a football player and as a person," he said. "I also want to know how many athletes they graduate each year."

Two other teammates of Smith's from the Class of 2010, OL David Beasley and DE Corey Crawford, also picked up offers from South Carolina. Smith talked with about the three potentially playing together at the next level.

"We all have our own decision to make," he said. "We aren't pushing each other to go to the same school but it's a real possibility we will. We really haven't discussed it, though."

Some visits are on deck for the 6-foot-3, 235-pounder.

"I know I will also visit Southern Mississippi, Tennessee, and probably Georgia and Florida too," he said.

Smith knows what he is looking for in a school.

"Academics will be a big factor," he said. "I could easily get injured and it will really depend on academics. I also want to be able to get playing time."

Smith told when he would make his decision-and revealed his current leader.

"It will probably be after my football season but before Signing Day," he said. "Southern Miss is my leader right now."
