Top Michigan back interested in Iowa

There's a lot to like about Austin White. Off the field he is an engaging and friendly young man with the natural ability to lead. On the football field, the three star running back seems to glide in and out of cuts with ease and has outstanding speed. He is the total package and on Saturday at the Nike Camp in Champaign he showed why Iowa and several other schools have extended scholarship offers.

The 6-foot and 186 pound back from Livonia, Michigan was the best back on the field at the Nike Camp in Champaign on Saturday afternoon and it was easy to see why schools like Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Illinois, Purdue, Wisconsin, and LSU have already extended scholarship offers.

With all of those offers already on the table, White didn't need the camp to prove himself once again. But his love of competition shined brightly on the field.

"It was fun competing with all these guys from different schools that you don't get to compete against during the season," he said on Saturday after winning MVP honors among the running back group.

He also won a head to head battle against future Hawkeye James Morris, who earned MVP honors among the linebackers. It was one play, winner take all. Loser does pushups with his position group. White won the head to head finale after Morris stumbled.

"Something I love about the game of football is the opportunity to make big plays," White said. "When that happens, I love it. What it came down to was he kind of tripped up a little bit, so it wasn't like I really beat him. He is a really great player and competitor."

White also went head to head against another future Hawkeye earlier in the one on one drills. He is good friends with Austin Gray, who has verbally committed to Iowa. The two Austin's have spend plenty of time together at various camps in the state of Michigan.

"A lot of the guys from Michigan know each other because you camp at many of the same places and you get to be pretty good friends. It was good to see Austin again today and he was out there doing his thing and I know he is headed to Iowa."

White made a trip this winter to Iowa for a Junior Day and has an offer from the Hawkeyes. He said on Saturday that he would like to make a return trip soon and may stop by Iowa City on his way to a family reunion in Texas.

"We have a family reunion down in Houston and if we drive down there, I think we are going to stop at Iowa. Right now I am not 100% sure, but I definitely want to go back there again. I was there for a junior day and I had a great time there. I love the coaches," White said.

He said he is being recruited by Phil Parker from Iowa. White said he receives hand written notes each week from Head Coach Kirk Ferentz and running backs coach Lester Erb stopped by his high school twice during the most recent evaluation period.

Would a Michigan prospect with offers from Michigan and Michigan State and strong ties to home take a long look outside the state?

"There is always an attraction to stay in-state. My brothers go to Michigan State and it is close to home, which is nice. But, my brothers and my family always tell me not to make a decision because of us and to make a decision for yourself. Ultimately it is my decision and I have to feel comfortable with it. Maybe that will be close to home, but it might not be the right fit and that is why I want to go out to different schools and see if I can find the right fit."
