Iowa getting a versatile playmaker in Vier

Running a 4.65 forty at 6-foot-7 and 220 pounds, Austin Vier has the size and speed to do a number of different things at the college level. Whether it is at quarterback, tight end, or elsewhere, it is pretty clear that the Hawkeyes are getting a versatile playmaker in the Huxley native. We caught up with Ballard coach Al Christian to learn more about Vier and his future at Iowa.

Q: What can you tell us about Austin and what kind of player Iowa is getting?

CHRISTIAN: Well, I think the first thing that I notice as a coach from Austin is his commitment to the team, his commitment to academics, good character, good in the classroom, and all of those intangibles that you like to see in an athlete. Then along with that, his work ethic. Last year, his highlight tape didn't catch a lot of people's eyes, but he took that as motivation. His body matured, his mind matured, and he had a good basketball season and came out for track and got stronger and faster. I think it was one of those situations where he went to Iowa and they knew he had the potential to be a player, but he went there and kind of blew them away with his work ethic and the physical development that he had over this last year.

Q: This all happened pretty quickly didn't it?

CHRISTIAN: Right. I think it was just one of those things where he went from just being on the radar to them seeing him in person and seeing his potential and the ability this kid has to get better. He knows he's not there yet. He knows he has to work, but the potential is there with the body and the work ethic that he has to be a good player.
